Dominica "in shock" after one of the region's most devastating storms in modern history
|
On the late evening of Monday, September 18th, 2017 Hurricane Maria, measured at a Category 5, made landfall on the shores of Dominica leveling many structures in its path, closing seaports & airports, flooding neighborhoods and cities, and while many citizens were able to find safe haven during the storm, there was also a saddening loss of life that had been tolled.
At the dawn of the next morning after the catastrophic storm had passed, the people of Dominica both at home and abroad had to take stock of the devastating blow left in its wake. The people of Dominica have shown incredible courage, hope, and resourcefulness even in the very early stages and first few steps of the rehabilitation of their island and their island way of life. Caribbean diaspora and concerned citizens around the world have been responding with deep empathy and charity for Dominica as well as the other island communities that have been affected. Dominica will continue to need our help and commitment over both the short and long term to help restore their way of life...will you be a part of that effort today? Our collective efforts have and will continue to make a difference. |
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Restoring Dominica
As an international community of governments, community organizations, and citizens we WILL rebuild Dominica to the beautiful nature island it was always meant to be--lush mountainsides, houses painted with tropical island colours, welcoming shutters with warm faces just inside, creole music playing in the distance. Together, we will work alongside the people of Dominica to restore their island home.
